What it is

The Sensex is a stock market index. An index is a single number that tracks how a chosen group of shares is performing, so you do not have to check each share one by one. The Sensex is linked to the Bombay Stock Exchange (BSE), and it is widely used as a quick reading of the mood in Indian equities. You can find a short definition on our page on the Sensex.

It sits alongside the Nifty 50, the equivalent benchmark followed on the National Stock Exchange (NSE). News reports usually quote both together.

The Sensex is a stock market index: one number that summarises how a group of shares listed on the BSE is moving.

How it works

The index is expressed in points, not rupees. A point is simply one unit on the index scale. When reports say the Sensex fell 500 points, the index number dropped by 500 from the previous close. It does not mean investors lost ₹500.

The level on its own matters less than the change. A rise means the shares in the index moved up on balance, and a fall means they moved down. It is a summary, so individual shares, and shares outside the index, can behave differently on the same day.

The index only moves while the exchanges are open. CNBC-TV18 reported that on ordinary trading days the equity market opens at 9:15 am and shuts at 3:30 pm. Weekends and declared holidays are left out.

Why it is in the news

On Monday, 19 October 2026, the Sensex tumbled 876.37 points to settle at 73,852.90, and the Nifty dropped 257.20 points to 22,888.95, according to a PTI report carried by BusinessLine.

The fall spilled into the currency market. The same report said the rupee pared early gains and settled 3 paise lower at 94.92 against the US dollar (provisional), weighed down by the sharp fall in domestic equities and a recovery in crude oil prices. That ended a six-session winning streak for the rupee. Our coverage has more: rupee falls 3 paise to 94.92 against dollar.

The exchanges then took a break. NSE and BSE stayed closed on Tuesday, 20 October, for Dussehra, and trading was due to resume on Wednesday, 21 October, according to CNBC-TV18. See NSE, BSE closed on 20 October for Dussehra.

On 21 October, shares of HD Fire Protect listed on the exchanges. According to NDTV Profit, they opened at ₹335 on the NSE against an IPO price of ₹271. An initial public offering (IPO) is the first time a company sells shares to the public. More in HD Fire Protect lists at 23.6% premium on NSE.

According to Economic Times and CNBC-TV18, three scheduled market holidays remain in 2026:

  • 10 November: Diwali-Balipratipada
  • 24 November: Prakash Gurpurb Sri Guru Nanak Dev
  • 25 December: Christmas

CNBC-TV18 also reported that Diwali Laxmi Pujan falls on Sunday, 8 November, and that the exchanges are expected to hold the customary Muhurat Trading session, a special trading hour to mark Diwali. Timings are to be announced separately.

What it means for you

If you hold shares or equity mutual funds, a big one-day fall in the Sensex tells you the market as a whole was weak that day. It does not tell you how your own holdings fared. Check your portfolio rather than the headline number.

The index can also coincide with moves beyond the stock market. The 19 October episode shows how weakness in equities can sit alongside pressure on the rupee. If you send money to India or plan to, the Currency Converter lets you see what a given amount is worth at a chosen rate.

Finally, a points change depends on the starting level. The same 876-point move means a different percentage at different index levels, so look at the percentage change when comparing days that are far apart.

What it means for you

The Sensex is a summary number for a group of BSE-listed shares, not a measure of your own portfolio. A sharp fall, like the 876.37-point drop on 19 October 2026, can coincide with pressure on the rupee. Check percentage changes and your own holdings rather than relying on the headline points alone.
