What happened
The Indian currency firmed up by 29 paise in early deals on Wednesday, 21 October 2026, reaching 94.62 per US dollar. It opened at 94.78 at the interbank foreign exchange market, where banks trade currencies with each other, and then climbed further.
Reports in BusinessLine and The Hindu attributed the move to positive sentiment in the domestic market and support from the Reserve Bank of India (RBI). The Hindu described that support as RBI intervention to curb demand for US dollars.
Analysts also pointed to foreign dollar inflows linked to the Jio IPO, which opened for public subscription on Wednesday. Aamir Makda of Choice Broking said foreign investors were largely using sell/buy swaps during the allotment process. In such a swap, they sell dollars for rupees in the spot market and agree to buy the dollars back within a short window, usually under a week.
Higher crude oil prices and a firm dollar capped the rise. Brent crude, the global oil benchmark, was up 1.42% at $110.33 a barrel in futures trade. The dollar index, which measures the dollar against a basket of six currencies, was up 0.06% at 101.58.
Makda expected the rupee to trade in a range of 94.00 to 94.75 during the session. The Times of India reported that the rupee touched a six-week high of 94.50, a level the other reports did not mention.

What it means for you
A stronger rupee means each dollar buys fewer rupees. That can slightly reduce the rupee cost of dollar bills such as foreign tuition or overseas travel. For NRIs sending money to India, each dollar converts into fewer rupees than at the previous close of 94.91. You can check the effect with our Currency Converter or the Money Transfer to India Calculator.
Elevated oil prices remain a headwind, said Makda. India buys much of its oil in dollars, so costlier crude tends to raise dollar demand.
In equities, the Sensex rose 665.10 points to 74,518 and the Nifty gained 188.40 points to 23,077.35. Exchange data showed that Foreign Institutional Investors (FIIs) were net sellers on Monday, offloading shares worth about ₹1,148.64 crore more than they bought.
