What happened

The government collected ₹2.31 lakh crore in gross Goods and Services Tax (GST) in October 2026, a 22.9% jump on a year earlier. The figure comes from provisional data released on Sunday, 1 November. A year ago the same month brought in ₹1.88 lakh crore, as reported by CNBC-TV18 and the Times of India.

Net GST revenue, which is what remains after refunds are paid out, increased 25.6% to ₹2.03 lakh crore from ₹1.61 lakh crore a year earlier.

Domestic versus imports

Imports drove much of the rise. GST collected on imports grew 42.2% to ₹72,246 crore from ₹50,796 crore. Domestic GST revenue rose 15.8% to ₹1.59 lakh crore.

Within the domestic total of ₹1,59,044 crore, Central GST (CGST) contributed ₹42,935 crore, State GST (SGST) ₹51,340 crore and Integrated GST (IGST) ₹64,769 crore.

Refunds

Total refunds rose 6.5% to ₹27,934 crore. Domestic refunds grew 9.8% to ₹14,007 crore, and export refunds rose 3.4% to ₹13,927 crore. Because refunds grew much more slowly than gross collections, net revenue grew faster than gross.

Net domestic GST revenue rose 16.4% to ₹1,45,037 crore, and net customs-related GST rose 56.2% to ₹58,319 crore.

Seven-month totals

Across the first seven months of FY27 (April to October), gross GST receipts came to ₹14.77 lakh crore, up 13.2% from ₹13.05 lakh crore in the same period last year. Net revenue stood at ₹12.69 lakh crore, a 12.6% rise.

The split shows a wide gap. Taxes from domestic activity were ₹10.33 lakh crore, up 7.4%, whereas imports contributed ₹4.44 lakh crore, a much faster 29.3% increase. Refunds paid out over the period totalled ₹2.08 lakh crore, 16.9% more than before. Some reports round the gross figure to ₹14.78 lakh crore.

State-wise picture

Maharashtra recorded the highest GST revenue in October at ₹35,150 crore, up 13% from ₹31,013 crore. Karnataka rose 18% to ₹15,922 crore and Gujarat 16% to ₹13,516 crore. Haryana grew 17% to ₹11,529 crore and Uttar Pradesh 24% to ₹10,235 crore.

Assam reported a 47% increase to ₹1,934 crore. Sikkim fell 28% to ₹221 crore, Himachal Pradesh declined 2% to ₹704 crore and Puducherry dropped 7% to ₹179 crore.

After the settlement between the Centre and states, SGST revenue for states and Union Territories rose 13% to ₹1,03,341 crore.

What it means for you

GST is the indirect tax charged on most goods and services. Higher collections show more tax flowing to the Centre and states, which fund spending. They do not change the GST you pay on a purchase. You can check the tax on a bill with the GST Calculator.

Tax experts quoted by the Times of India read the numbers as a sign of steady consumption and economic activity. Nitin Vijaivergia of Price Waterhouse & Co LLP said the rise in imports “merits attention from a domestic manufacturing perspective”.

Background

Provisional figures can change slightly when they are finalised. Deloitte India’s Mahesh Jaising linked the sustained collections to confidence in further GST reform, noting that rate cuts were made in the middle of last year. For the basics, see our explainer on Goods and Services Tax.

What it means for you

The data shows tax collections growing strongly, helped by imports and steady domestic activity. It does not change the GST rates you pay. Faster growth in net revenue than in refunds means more of the money collected stays with the government.
