What it is

Jio Platforms is a subsidiary of Reliance Industries. It is now selling its shares to the public for the first time through an initial public offering (IPO), which is how a company lists on a stock exchange and lets ordinary investors buy a stake.

An IPO has a price band, the range within which investors can bid for shares. Before the issue opens to everyone, a company can set aside a portion for large institutions called anchor investors. They are asked to commit early, and their allotment is announced before the public can bid.

How it works

The anchor book is the block of shares allotted to those early institutional buyers. A strong anchor book is often read as a sign of institutional interest, though it does not tell you how the shares will trade after listing.

Why it is in the news

The IPO opened on 21 October 2026. According to the Economic Times, the offer is worth ₹30,188 crore, while Mint put the amount the company aims to raise at about ₹30,213 crore. The reports differ slightly on the exact figure.

On 19 October, ThePrint reported, citing a stock exchange filing, that 212 anchor investors were given shares totalling ₹8,109.85 crore, priced at the upper end of the band. Mint reported the price at ₹1,119 per share. At that level, Mint said the company would be valued at about $108 billion, while the Economic Times reported an equity valuation of nearly ₹10.3 lakh crore.

Bids from institutions for the anchor portion came to more than ₹2.5 lakh crore, over 30 times what was available, the Economic Times and ThePrint reported. The Economic Times said more than 70 investors had shown interest, a mix that included international fund managers, state-backed investment funds, Indian mutual funds and insurance companies.

LIC received the largest allocation, ₹499.98 crore or 6.17% of the anchor book, NDTV Profit reported. Names reported among the anchors include BlackRock, Fidelity, GIC, SBI Mutual Fund, New World Fund, Capital Group, Abu Dhabi Investment Authority and Norway’s Government Pension Fund Global. The Economic Times also reported that the offer is expected to become larger than the earlier record set by Hyundai Motor India.

What it means for you

If you are thinking of applying, the anchor numbers show how institutions bid. They are not a forecast of what the shares will do on listing day, and no one can promise returns.

Applying through your broker means bidding within the price band. Check the minimum lot size and the closing date in the official offer documents. If you already own Reliance Industries shares or a mutual fund that holds them, you do not need to do anything, but it is worth knowing that a large subsidiary is being listed separately.

NRIs should check their eligibility and account route with their bank or broker before applying, as the sources do not cover NRI rules for this issue.

What it means for you

The Jio Platforms IPO is reported to be India's largest, with heavy institutional interest at the anchor stage. That shows demand from large investors but does not guarantee a listing gain. Read the offer documents, check the price band and lot size, and decide only what fits your own goals and risk.
